Deja Vu Studios BIOGRAPHY
TANZANIA
Born in 1996 in Dar es salaam, Turakella Editha Gyindo (Tura) is a multi-disciplinary artist and curator working with painting, performances, video and physical installations. Inspired by human nature and its adaptation to the new changing world, she calls into question the collective preconception and the colonial influence surrounding intersectionality, identity and belonging. Tura imagines a human as being whose identity can’t be pinned down to rigid social intersectional associations, one whose place in a society can be claimed not only through personal experiences, a human whose connection to the existence isn’t usually found in body experience. Her reality is found in her perception of the world.
After joining the Nafasi Art Space Academy for a Curatorial Practices and Art Management program in 2021, Tura has since then curated artistic projects and worked with institutions within and outside the country.
Currently, she is working as a curator at the Alliance Francaise of Dar es salaam.
Turakella's Projects For Creation Africa
The Collective is an artist studio visit project that aims to spotlight contemporary art in Tanzania by creating a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage with wider audiences. The project fosters collaboration and experimentation among Tanzanian artists, curators, and cultural practitioners, creating a vibrant ecosystem that bridges local talent with regional and international art networks.
Through curated studio visits, The Collective offers a space for in-depth artistic exchange, where artists can share their creative processes, research methodologies, and upcoming works.
The project spans 9 months and is based in Dar es Salaam, featuring studio visits, artist talks, exhibitions, and other events that actively engage the local community.
Central to its mission is the documentation and archival of Tanzanian contemporary art practices. To further enhance its impact, The Collective involves a strong social media strategy to amplify the visibility of participating artists nurturing emerging and mid-career artists in order to build sustainable networks that can drive future collaborations.
