DCMA BIOGRAPHY

TANZANIA

The Dhow Countries Music Academy Zanzibar (DCMA) is a non-profit, educational and cultural organization that opened Zanzibar’s first music school in September 2002. It provides music lessons as well as instruments at minimal cost to anyone interested in studying music related to their cultural background or acquiring mastery of an instrument. Special emphasis has been placed on teaching traditional music instruments and styles such as taarab, beni and kidumbak. The central aim of DCMA is to preserve and promote the musical heritage of Zanzibar and the Dhow Region (Eastern Coastal Africa, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Islands of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian States) whilst also introducing global musical genres in both educational settings and performance occasions to expand the musical and cultural repertoire.

The objectives of the Dhow Countries Music Academy are:

  1. To provide opportunities for the inhabitants of Zanzibar and the Dhow Region to study music related to their cultural backgrounds, with special emphasis on broadening the educational opportunities for young people, children and women, thus preserving the rich musical heritage of Zanzibar;

  2. To promote professional excellence among musicians through training seminars, workshops, debates, research, etc.

  3. To provide skills and resources to a group of talented young people so that they can make a living from music;

  4. To increase the number of jobs already available by marketing and promoting musicians to local venues, regional promoters, international festivals, etc.;

  5. To foster communication, networking and peaceful relationships on an international level with emphasis on the Dhow Region; and

  6. Forge local, regional and international cultural and educational partnerships based on equality, mutual respect and tolerance.

But the importance of Dhow Countries Music Academy goes beyond the preservation of Zanzibar musical heritage. The Academy believes that music is a tool for social change and youth empowerment, therefore it is very active in creating job opportunities for its students. They enjoy local and international music careers and most of the teaching staff are Academy’s graduates.

All activities at the Dhow Countries Music Academy center on the motto:

“Music for Education – Music for Employment – Music for Enjoyment”

DCMA's Projects For Creation Africa

The teaching, concerts, and workshops for the students are the main of our activities at DCMA.

Additionally, as part of the Fund Creation Africa initiative, the DCMA will focus on generating revenue through two key activities: a souvenir shop and a Dhow cruise featuring music entertainment.

The souvenir shop will be located at the DCMA and will offer a variety of items for tourists and guests visiting the academy, including T-shirts, CDs, books, musical instruments, greeting cards, and other locally made products.

The Dhow cruise with music entertainment will be scheduled weekly at Nungwi Northern Beach. This cruise will accommodate up to 30 passengers and will offer a picturesque sunset experience accompanied by live music. .
