Levels description

The A1 level : the “discovery” level
It is the first level of learning, that is to say this is where the student acquires their first achievements in French language. At this stage, the learner can interact in a simple way.What you will be able to do at the end of the level:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Talk about your family
  • Describe your environment and people
  • Describe your everyday life activities
  • Talk about your tastes
  • Buy some goods
  • Locate things and people and orient yourself in general
  • Write an invitation/thanking card

≈ 100 hrs to 120 hrs

The A2 level : the “survival stage”
At this level, the learner is able to communicate in simple and routine tasks, requiring common phrases and exchanges of information. He/she is able to communicate in simple daily life situations.What you will be able to do at the end of the level:

  • Talk about your background and immediate environment
  • Tell about past events/holidays.
  • Express prescriptions, obligations and interdictions
  • Make comparisons
  • Express future projects
  • Express your impressions and opinions

≈ 120 hrs

The B1 level : the “threshold” level
At this level, the user becomes independent. He/she can maintain interaction, can understand and maintain a discussion and give his/her opinion. He/she is capable of dealing with situations likely to arise in daily life.What you will be able to do at the end of the level :

  • Describe, tell and evoke past events
  • Express cause, consequence and goal
  • Compare and oppose
  • Make assumptions
  • Express a problem, explain, advise, justify
  • Express your opinion and talk about your feelings
  • Participate in a debate and present arguments

≈ 200 hrs

The B2 level : the “independent” level
A B2 user has a degree of independence that allows him/her to construct arguments to defend his/her opinion, explain his/her viewpoint and negotiate. At this level, the learner has a degree of fluency and spontaneity in regular interactions and he is capable of correcting his/her own mistakes.Note: B2 level is the level required to join university in France.What you will be able to do at the end of the level:

  • Give advice and express probability
  • Express opposition and persuade an audience
  • Express regrets and reproaches, talk about your experience
  • Make a stand and present arguments in a debate
  • Concede and defend ideas
  • Extract the main idea of an article and express a structured opinion about it

≈ 150 hrs

The C1 level : the autonomous level
At level C1, language users are autonomous. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously. They have a large vocabulary and can choose the appropriate expression to introduce their comments. They can produce clear, well-structured discourse without hesitation and which shows controlled use of structures.Note: C1 level is the level required to join a Master degree in France.What a C1 speaker is required to:

  • Present and/or describe a complex topic integrating secondary arguments and developing specific points to arrive to an appropriate conclusion
  • Follow easily a conversation in a group discussion, a debate, and take part to it even on abstract and non-familiar subjects.
  • Understand and use a broad range of vocabulary and structures when talking about complex and abstract topics with a relatively high degree of control

How long does it take to cover a level?

The required time to reach a level may vary from a person to another. It relies on different factors:

  • Your motivation
  • Your work methodology
  • Your temperament and personality : the more you dare to speak, the faster you’ll improve your skills !

Step Level
100/120 hours are required to reach the level
A1 Improvement is in general faster to complete these levels
+120 hours are required to reach the level
+200 hours are required to reach the level
B1 However, the higher you go, the longer it can take to achieve these levels
Upper Intermediate
+200 hours are required to reach the level
+150 hours are required to reach the level
+150 hours are required to reach the level
