The Alliance Française is a language and cultural relations organization. It was created in 1883 in Paris by renowned humanists, including Louis Pasteur and Jules Verne, with the principal objective of promoting and teaching the French language around the world.

Since then, it has developed into a global network of the Alliance Française institutions operating in 135 countries around the world with other 1 000 Alliance Française, all aiming of fostering friendship between peoples, through the promotion of the French language and cultural diversity.

The Alliance Française of Dar Es Salaam (AFDAR) is a registered Tanzanian non-profit organization run by a Board of Directors comprised of professionals, cultural figures and operating with the support of the French Embassy. It was founded in 1961 and is located in Upanga.
